thetonstermonster asked:

A multi-ethnic actress talks about what it’s like growing up in a mixed family and how she struggled with fitting in to specific “categories” as a teen. She discusses how being of mixed ethnicity is a blessing, not a curse, and we should embrace our diverse backgrounds.

I remember when I was in k5 school, I used to feel like this. I’m mixed with Puerto Rican and Black. My grandparents would speak the language to me all the time, I only knew some of the language…but know, i’m in the 9th grade, and I am sooo proud to call myself a latina, and I love the language!

it’s very simple, you should hear spanish conversations and learn some phrases and vocabulary, and that’s all!

hey girlie…I grew up in a pr household myself and can’t speak spanish that well either. It didn’t help that my dad looked caucasian and I came out looking like a mutt. It’s okay. I’ve learned to accept that Puerto Rican is not a race, it is a place…and many ethnic groups are intertwined with the island, and so, I embrace multicultural reality. Spanish or not…our roots still exist. stay strong…and nappy hair isn’t so bad…I think it’s hot!
